The Australian motorcycle market has experienced a promising start to 2026, with a 7.4% increase in sales during the first quarter compared to the same period in 2025.
According to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), a total of 20,624 motorcycles, scooters, and off-highway vehicles were sold between January and March this year.

The off-road motorcycle segment emerged as the primary driver of this growth, recording a substantial 26.7% year-on-year increase, with 8,737 units sold. This surge reflects a growing enthusiasm for recreational riding and trail biking among Australians.

Scooter sales also contributed positively, rising by 7.8% to 1,431 units. This uptick indicates a shift towards more economical and efficient urban transportation solutions, especially in densely populated areas.

Conversely, road motorcycle sales declined by 3.2%, and off-highway vehicle sales dropped by 9.2%, highlighting a mixed performance across different market segments.

FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber commented on these trends, stating, "The first quarter results show solid growth, primarily due to strong performance in the off-road segment, driven by recreational demand." He also noted that while these figures precede the impact of global events such as the Middle East conflict and fuel price volatility, there is an expectation of increased interest in road motorcycles and scooters as alternative forms of urban transport in the near future.

For prospective buyers, this growth suggests a robust market with diverse options across various segments. The rising popularity of off-road motorcycles and scooters may lead to more competitive financing options and promotional deals, making it an opportune time to consider a purchase.

As the year progresses, it will be interesting to observe how external factors influence consumer behavior and market dynamics. However, the current data indicates a resilient and adaptable motorcycle market in Australia.
