The Regional Investment Corporation (RIC) has announced the introduction of two new low-interest loan products aimed at supporting Australian farmers and fishers grappling with the adverse effects of drought and harmful algal blooms.
This initiative reflects the government's commitment to bolstering the resilience of the nation's primary producers in the face of environmental challenges.

Federal Agriculture Minister Julie Collins confirmed an additional allocation of $1 billion to the RIC, increasing its total lending capacity. This funding is intended to provide much-needed financial relief to those in the agricultural and fishing sectors who have been severely impacted by prolonged drought conditions and the proliferation of harmful algal blooms affecting marine ecosystems.

The newly introduced loan products offer favourable terms, including low-interest rates and flexible repayment options, designed to assist eligible farmers and fishers in managing cash flow, investing in recovery efforts, and implementing strategies to mitigate future risks associated with environmental adversities.

To access these loans, applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria, which include demonstrating the impact of drought or algal blooms on their operations. The RIC has streamlined the application process to ensure timely support reaches those in need.

Industry representatives have welcomed this initiative, recognising it as a vital step towards sustaining the viability of Australia's agricultural and fishing industries. They emphasise the importance of continued government support and the development of long-term strategies to address the challenges posed by climate variability and environmental changes.

For affected farmers and fishers, this financial assistance offers a pathway to recovery and adaptation, enabling them to rebuild and strengthen their operations against future environmental challenges.
