The Australian motorcycle market has experienced a notable 7.4% increase in sales during the first quarter of 2026, with off-road motorcycles emerging as the primary driver of this growth.
According to data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), a total of 20,624 units were sold between January and March 2026, marking a significant uptick compared to the same period in the previous year.

Off-road motorcycles saw a remarkable 26.7% year-on-year increase, totaling 8,737 units sold. This surge not only positions off-road bikes as the leading segment for the quarter but also indicates a growing consumer interest in recreational and adventure riding. The popularity of off-road models can be attributed to their versatility and appeal to both new riders and seasoned enthusiasts seeking outdoor experiences.

In contrast, the road motorcycle segment experienced a slight decline, with sales decreasing by 3.2% to 7,815 units. This downturn suggests that economic factors and changing consumer preferences may be influencing the demand for traditional road bikes. Additionally, the off-highway vehicle (OHV) segment, which includes all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and side-by-side vehicles (SSVs), recorded a 9.2% decrease, totaling 2,641 units sold.

Scooters, however, bucked the trend with a 7.8% increase in sales, reaching 1,431 units. This growth reflects a rising interest in cost-effective and efficient urban transportation solutions, particularly in densely populated areas where scooters offer a practical alternative to cars.

While the overall market growth is encouraging, it's important to note that the FCAI figures do not encompass all brands operating in Australia. Notably, brands such as Royal Enfield, Benelli, and CFMOTO are not included in these statistics, suggesting that the actual market size may be larger than reported.

For potential motorcycle buyers, especially those considering financing options, this market shift underscores the importance of understanding current trends. Off-road motorcycles' rising popularity may influence loan terms and availability, as lenders adjust to the changing demand. Prospective buyers should explore various financing options, compare interest rates, and consider their financial situation to secure the best possible deal.

In summary, the first quarter of 2026 has demonstrated a dynamic shift in the Australian motorcycle market, with off-road motorcycles leading the charge. This trend highlights evolving consumer preferences and presents opportunities for both buyers and industry stakeholders to adapt to the changing landscape.
