The Sutherland Shire Council in Sydney's south is considering implementing restrictions on the parking of caravans and trailers on suburban streets.
This deliberation follows nearly 3,000 complaints from residents in 2025 regarding the prolonged parking of such vehicles, which has led to concerns over visual amenity, reduced sightlines, and safety risks.

In response, the council is exploring a targeted trial of new parking measures, including the installation of signs reading 'No Parking - Motor Vehicles Excepted.' This signage would permit standard motor vehicles to park while excluding non-self-propelled vehicles like detached trailers, caravans, camper trailers, and boat trailers.

The council plans to review a detailed report in April 2026, which will assess enforcement options under current laws and consider potential legislative changes. The report will also evaluate the feasibility of a trial in specific areas, such as Tonkin Street, Gannons Road near Woolooware Golf Course, Woolooware Road, Kingsway sports fields, and Lilli Pilli sports ground.

This initiative reflects the council's commitment to addressing community concerns and balancing the needs of residents with those of caravan and trailer owners. It underscores the importance of effective urban planning and community engagement in managing shared public spaces.
