The Boating Industry Association Ltd (BIA) has issued a compelling appeal to all levels of Australian government, emphasizing the urgent need for strategic support to bolster the nation's esteemed marine manufacturing and recreational boating sector.
This call to action arises amidst a significant skills shortage that poses a threat to the industry's economic vitality and growth potential.

According to the BIA's latest industry data, the recreational marine sector is a major contributor to the national economy, generating over $10.2 billion in annual direct turnover and supporting more than 35,000 jobs across the country. Despite this substantial impact, the industry faces challenges due to a lack of skilled workers in critical trades such as boatbuilding, marine mechanics, and shipwrights.

BIA CEO Andrew Fielding highlighted the necessity for government intervention, stating that without targeted investment in trade training and apprenticeship programs, the industry's manufacturing capabilities could be severely hindered. This, in turn, would jeopardize jobs and economic activity that are vital to communities nationwide.

The BIA's National Recreational Boating Statement 2025 outlines strategic priorities, including recognizing the marine sector as a key component of Australia's manufacturing base, investing in trade training to alleviate skill shortages, and enhancing infrastructure to support safe and convenient access for all. By addressing these areas, the BIA aims to secure the future of the marine industry and ensure its continued contribution to the Australian economy.

For boat owners and enthusiasts, this advocacy underscores the importance of a robust and skilled workforce in maintaining the quality and innovation of Australian-made marine products. Supporting initiatives that promote skills development within the industry is crucial for sustaining the vibrant boating culture that many Australians cherish.
