BIA and AFTA Unite to Strengthen Australia's Boating and Fishing Sectors

New Partnership Aims to Enhance Support and Advocacy for Boat-Based Fishing

BIA and AFTA Unite to Strengthen Australia's Boating and Fishing Sectors?w=400
In a significant move for Australia's outdoor recreation sector, the Boating Industry Association (BIA) and the Australian Fishing Trade Association (AFTA) have formalised an agreement to collaborate more closely.
This partnership is designed to benefit their combined membership base and bolster support for boat-based fishing across the nation.

The agreement encompasses various areas of cooperation, including data sharing, communications, marketing, advertising, events, business systems, revenue streams, advocacy, and support for boat-based fishing activities. By aligning their efforts, BIA and AFTA aim to create a more cohesive and robust support system for the boating and fishing communities.

Collectively, BIA and AFTA contribute approximately $21 billion to the Australian economy annually and support around 135,000 jobs. This collaboration underscores the significant economic and social impact of the boating and fishing industries in Australia.

Andrew Fielding, CEO of BIA, highlighted the importance of this agreement, stating, "We have worked together informally over recent years in the area of advocacy to government and we already have a foundation of good collaboration with AFTA, now we can take that to another level for the benefit of our members and public."

Michael Starkey, President of AFTA, echoed these sentiments, noting the potential for enhanced cooperation in various domains, including research, data, and events. "There are great prospects to collaborate on boat and fishing shows across Australia and to explore opportunities for future events where we work together," Starkey said.

This partnership is particularly timely, given the popularity of recreational boating and fishing in Australia. With more than 85% of the population living within 50 kilometres of the coast, it's estimated that nearly one in five households owns a boat or watercraft. Additionally, approximately 5 million Australians participate in boating each year, with 4.2 million engaging in recreational fishing from shore or boat.

By joining forces, BIA and AFTA aim to enhance the experiences of these enthusiasts, provide better support to industry members, and advocate more effectively for policies that benefit the boating and fishing communities. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in ensuring the sustainability and growth of these vital sectors in Australia's outdoor recreation landscape.
